The Top 40 Things Nearly Every Couple Asks – And Totally Should!

Planning a wedding is exciting—but also full of “Wait, what do we do about...?” moments. Don’t worry, I’ve got your back. Here are the most common questions I get from couples like you (and a few you didn’t know you needed to ask!).

The Legal Bits – Because Yes, You Actually Need Paperwork

1.Wait, can’t anyone be a Celebrant?
Actually… nope!

Becoming a registered marriage celebrant in Australia isn’t as simple as loving love (though that helps!). It takes serious training, commitment, and a whole lot of paperwork. I completed a nationally accredited Certificate IV in Celebrancy, which meant months of study, legal training, assessments, and yes—even mock ceremonies where we practised marrying pretend couples. Once I passed all that, I had to prove I’m a decent human by submitting written affidavits confirming I’m an upstanding member of the community. Then came the big step: applying to the Attorney-General’s Department for official registration—a process that isn’t guaranteed, even after all the study. And it doesn’t stop there! Every year I complete mandatory professional development to stay sharp and up to date with marriage laws and ceremony standards, plus I pay an annual registration fee to remain on the official Register of Marriage Celebrants. There are a lot of hoops to jump through—and honestly, there should be. Marriage is a serious (and seriously beautiful) commitment, and you deserve someone who knows their stuff and brings the heart, humour, and legal know-how to do it right.

2. What paperwork do we need?
We’ll need to fill out a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) before the big day. Sounds scary, but I’ll walk you through it. You’ll need to show me proof of birth and ID documents when we complete this paperwork, as well as proof of any previous marriages ending.

3. When should we do the NOIM?
At least one calendar month before your ceremony—but you can do it up to 18 months in advance if you’re super organised.

4. Can you help with the forms?
Absolutely. That’s part of what I’m here for. No need to decipher confusing government websites alone.

5. Do we need witnesses?
Yes! Two people at your ceremony, over 18, who are happy to watch you tie the knot. They don’t even need to know you that well.

6. What about registering the marriage afterward?
I take care of that for you. Your job is to enjoy the champagne.

7. When do we get the official marriage certificate?
I’ll give you a pretty one on the day, but the legal certificate gets posted to you later. Unlike a lot of other Celebrants - I’ll actually pay the fee for you and have it delivered to your door.

8. Can we do a private legal signing and a big symbolic ceremony later?
Totally! It’s your love story—do it your way.

9. Can we include religious or cultural traditions?
Of course. Whether it’s handfasting, jumping the broom, or your nan reading a blessing—we can weave it all in.

10. How long does a legal ceremony have to be?
Legally? Like, 5 minutes. But most couples go for 15–30 mins with vows, stories, and happy tears.

Booking, Pricing & Practical Stuff

11. Are you free on our date?
I hope so! Let’s chat and check.

12. How early should we book you?
As early as you can—especially for popular seasons or weekends. Some dates book up fast!

13. What’s included in your fee?
Think: legal paperwork, personalised ceremony, meetings, emails, support, a sound system, and my bad jokes (optional). I’ll spell it all out clearly—no surprises.

14. Do you take a deposit?
Yes—a non-refundable booking fee of $200 locks in your date. The balance is due closer to the ceremony.

15. Will you charge us for travel?
Travel within Brisbane and the Redlands Coast is included. Going further afield? No worries—we’ll chat about any extra costs upfront.

Making It Your Ceremony

16. Can we write our own vows?
YES! I absolutely encourage it. And I’ll help if you’re stuck. Funny, romantic, dorky—it’s all welcome.

17. Will you help us create the ceremony?
That’s the best part! We’ll craft something that feels just right for you two (Check out my different packages for the extent of this inclusion).

18. Can we include fun stuff like handfasting or sand ceremonies?
Absolutely. I’ve done Quakes/Hand-fastings, and I’m always keen to try something new and different. If it’s meaningful to you, let’s add it in!

19. Religious or non-religious—we’re not sure…
I’m not a religious-specific celebrant (you can book a religious celebrant if that’s what you’re after), but I can add religious readings, blessing of rings and anything spiritual, traditional, quirky—you name it. It’s your call.

20. Can we see a sample ceremony?
Absolutely. I’ve got example scripts to inspire you—and then we make yours unique.

21. How do you get to know us?
We chat! I’ll also send you a fun couple’s questionnaire to get your story and vibe.

22. Can we meet you before we decide?
Yes please! Let’s grab a coffee or Zoom—it’s like a first date, but way less awkward (check my packages for more info on this).

23. Can we approve the ceremony before the day?
Of course. You’ll get a draft, and we’ll tweak it until you love it.

On the Day (and Rehearsals Too)

24. Do you do rehearsals?
Yes (over the phone or Zoom included)! Extra fees apply for in-person *and subject to my availability. Rehearsals are optional, but super handy if you’ve got a wedding party or love a run-through. I also offer a rehearsal checklist if you’d like to DIY.

25. What time do you arrive on the day?
At least 45 minutes to an hour early, ready to set up and settle in.

26. What do you wear?
Something wedding-appropriate! I’ll check if there’s a theme or colour palette you want me to match.

27. Do you bring a mic or sound system?
Yes—a pro BOSE PA with a high quality wireless mic. Everyone will hear your vows (and my fabulous voice).

28. What happens if you get sick or stuck?
I’ve got a network of trusted celebrants on standby—your ceremony will absolutely still go ahead.

Trust & Experience

29. How many weddings have you done?
Lots! I’ve had the absolute joy of marrying many amazing couples over the years, and each ceremony has been uniquely special. On top of that, I bring a strong background in wedding planning, writing, and voiceover work (so your ceremony will sound just as good as it feels!). Plus, as an organised mum, I know how to keep things running smoothly, calmly, and on time—because timing and details matter when it comes to “I do.”

30. Do you have reviews or testimonials?
Yes, and I am so grateful for each one! You can read my 5 Star testimonials [here].

Logistics & Ceremony Flow

31. What happens if the weather is bad (for outdoor ceremonies)?
I am flexible and will adapt to your wet weather plan if needed.

32. Do we need a signing table and chairs? Do you provide them?
Nope, I don’t supply a signing table or chairs—mainly because I don’t have a van, a trailer, or a team of strong roadies! I prefer to pour all my energy into crafting and delivering an unforgettable ceremony, not hauling furniture. Most venues or stylists can easily help with this, and I’m happy to point you in the right direction.

33. Can you coordinate with our other vendors (photographer, musicians, planner)?
Absolutely, I happily work in sync with other pros to keep things smooth, on time, and fabulous.

34. How do you handle name changes?
I have all the steps to a post-wedding name-change process (along with a ton of other helpful info) in my Planning Portal (available to you upon booking).

Tone, Feel & Inclusivity

35. We’re shy / introverted / hate being the centre of attention—can we keep it low-key?
Of course, I’ve got you! I can make the ceremony feel relaxed and low-pressure while still being heartfelt and meaningful.

36. Are you LGBTQIA+ inclusive?
This is a loud “YES”

37. What if we want a surprise or secret element in the ceremony?
Sometimes one partner wants to surprise the other, or there’s a secret reading/gift. I’m definitely on board to help pull it off.

Post-Ceremony Support & Extras

38. Can we keep a copy of the ceremony script?
Many couples love this as a keepsake. I offer a digital copy.

39. Do you offer elopements, micro-weddings, or registry-style ceremonies too?
I do all of these. Please check out my packages for more info.

40. Can you help us choose readings or music?
Yes, absa-frickin-lootly! I have all these resources and more, available in my Planning Portal, and I’m happy to chat with you and research further to find what’s right for you.
